Happy Mexico Anniversary!

This week, we’re settling in to house-sit #9 in Mexico City. I have a number of blog posts and videos in the works, covering our year of travels, some fun statistics from our adventure, and our upcoming plans that are getting more defined. But in the meantime, I just wanted to write a quick post to commemorate one year in Mexico!

We did not plan on being full-time house-sitters, but this has given our travels a sense of purpose. It’s hard to believe we fairly easily booked ten solid months of back-to-back house-sits, which gave us new friendships with wonderful people all over Mexico. It’s completely changed my perspective on travel. We’ve driven 8,500 miles through 21 states, and can say without a doubt that this country only gets more and more endearing.

If I had to pick a few major takeaways from this experience: The people here are the friendliest and welcoming that I’ve ever met. Some of the best memories from our travels are the surprise conversations with people walking on the street, and our temporary neighbors. The history is much more fascinating than we’re taught in US schools, and although I’ve been reading diligently, I still have much to learn. Same goes for the climate, culture, and food; every new area brings diverse new delights to learn and explore. I’m constantly reminded that the negative propaganda regarding Mexico is often shockingly exaggerated, or outright false.

I love it here. I will without a doubt miss Mexico the moment we leave, and will do everything I can to maintain a strong connection. Spoiler alert: we’re heading to Japan in early 2023! But, more on that later. We have Temporary Residency in Mexico until the end of 2025, at which time it will be a fairly simple process to obtain Permanent Residency. We can’t wait to have kids and bring them here! And who knows, maybe we’ll end up finding a little land in a tiny pueblita…
